SUSAN LUKAS ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My digital photo collages are paradoxes. I create the illusion of movement with still photos by using colors, textures and composition. My kinetic collages are several photos combined or the same photo manipulated on many layers to create painterly images.

My subject matter, though natural or industrial, remains Wisconsin. Only by offering both views can I explore the beauty, variety and complexity that I've found in my native state.

When I sit down at the computer I’m not always sure how it will turn out. Like a jazz musician who improvises with music, I invent new images with photos and Photoshop. I like the creative freedom that the computer has given my work. It's a tool that has provided me with challenges and pleasure as I pursue my artistic goals.

If I like an image, I make a test print using my Epson inkjet printer with Ultra-chrome inks. I often set the new image where I can see it for a week and consider it. It’s not something that can be rushed. Sometimes it's a process that can go for weeks. If I decide to use the image, I then print it in various sizes, mat it and frame it. My limited-edition archival prints come in four sizes at art shows, but custom sizes are available.

I have been a professional photographer and graphic designer since 1978. My new digital images evolved out of a combination of both disciplines. I started exhibiting at shows in 1988 and have won many awards for my work. My most prestigious award would be Grand Prize 2008 Wisconsin Trails magazine photo contest for “Raindrops”.

I have taught photography to adults since 2003. If you are interested in one-on-one instruction, please click here for more information. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire and have studied desktop publishing at MATC and at various workshops.
